5 Shows You Should Be Watching

With all that’s going on in the world right now, sometimes you need an escape. It’s really comforting to be able to immerse yourself into the world of a good show. These shows have provided me with so much relief over the past few months, and I hope some of them can do the same for you!

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is the ultimate comfort show. A comedy that doesn’t rely on tearing down others? Check. Realistic and fun character dynamics? Also check. A world without homophobia? Triple check! The show follows the Rose family, who were once very wealthy, but lost everything and were forced to move to the small town that they bought as a joke. I fell in love with Schitt’s Creek so quickly- it has so much heart and is genuinely one of the funniest sitcoms I’ve ever seen. The cast is amazing (Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy are in it!) both on and off-screen. This show is so pleasant and fun - pure escapism.

The Mindy Project

The Mindy Project was the first show I watched during quarantine… and I miss it. Sure, it’s not perfect- there’s a cast overhaul in the middle of the first season for no apparent reason. However, it’s light, funny, and distracting. Created by and starring Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project follows the lives of ob/gyn Mindy Lahiri and her co-workers. It’s quirky, easy-to-binge, and Mindy is a fashion icon. Plus, if you’re anything like me, you’ll fall in love with the rom-com-like qualities and references in the show.

Veep

Okay, hear me out... Veep is by no means a comforting show, but it was a great distraction for me, and extremely enjoyable. Veep is a political satire/comedy that follows fictional vice president Selina Meyer’s career. Not a single one of the characters is a good person- but that’s on purpose. This show is quick witted, funny, and although the politics do get a bit stressful and ludacris sometimes, it’s a fun watch. Honestly, the constant chaos was somewhat comforting for me- it kind of matched the constant chatter in my head, you know? Veep is a great show, and it’s 17 Emmy awards can attest to that.

Duncanville

Perhaps I’m biased since I love Amy Poehler, but I truly enjoyed Duncanville. It differs from what I usually watch, considering it’s an animated show, but it’s quirky and easy to watch. It follows Duncan, a 15 year old boy, and his family. It’s honestly hilarious! It also has a star-studded cast- Amy Poehler (who plays two roles!), Rashida Jones, and even Wiz Khalifa. Its animation style is cute, and it has some wild storylines in the quick 20 minute episodes. I found it to be a perfect binge show, and it was super nice to be able to watch it each Sunday once I caught up! I haven’t seen very many people talk about Duncanville, but I feel like it deserves so much more love. If you want a super fun and quick watch, I highly recommend it!

Superstore

Superstore is probably the ultimate distraction from the insanity of 2020. It’s so chaotic, you can’t look away. So funny, you can’t stop laughing. Superstore is pretty self-explanatory- it follows the lives of the workers at a big-box store. It’s reminiscent of The Office, if that’s something you enjoy! The main couple even has some Jim and Pam parallels. It’s a great show to watch if you need to unwind for a little. Watching it is always a fun time, plus it’s critically acclaimed, meaning I’m not the only one who seems to enjoy it!

I hope these suggestions were helpful! Having a show to help you unwind is always important, especially in these crazy times.
