{Minor Spoilers Ahead}

Ever since its creation in 1998, Harry Potter has become a global phenomenon, capturing the attention of children and adults alike. With its 7 books, 8 movies, and 2 theme parks, Harry Potter has grown into a billion dollar empire. But what is it that makes this story so beloved by millions of people around the world?

1.) The Characters:

Harry Potter has a long list of characters, from old, wise Dumbledore, to the lovable yet forgetful Neville Longbottom. This wide range of characters gives the audience at least one person that they can see themselves in.

2.) Relatability:

Everyone can relate to feeling like they're in the wrong world, just like Harry. Throughout the books, Harry deals with supernatural problems as well as things every teenager faces, like breakups and friendships. For example, while participating in the Triwizard Tournament, Harry also has to deal with his feelings for Cho Chang. This makes the characters feel more realistic and not as fictional as the rest of their world.

3.) Hogwarts:

Everyone needs a place they can escape to and feel safe in. For many fans across the globe, that place is Hogwarts. The school has history, magic, and drama, while still providing fans space to use their imaginations.

4.) The Themes:

Harry Potter explores some complex themes, such as death, love, and family. It also shows that there is a gray space between good and evil, much like the real world. It explores the feelings of grief and loss, as well as finding family in unlikely places.

5.) The Love Stories:

Harry Potter has no shortage of love and relationships, and who can resist a good love story? We get to see the slow-burning romance between Ron and Hermione, and the unlikely coupling of Ginny and Harry. We also get to learn a little bit about Harry's parents, James and Lily. At first they seem like polar opposites, but as they grow, we begin to see that they’re soulmates. These love stories make the magic seem even more real.

6.) The Plot:

Throughout the story, there are several things that foreshadow what will happen to the characters later on. For example, in the first book, we see that Fred and George are throwing snowballs at the back of Quirrell's head, not knowing that Voldemort is there. This makes it fun to go back and re-watch the movies or re-read the books.

7.) The Community:

Chances are that when you mention Harry Potter, lots of people know what you’re talking about. It’s fun to figure out what house you’re in and what your wand would be made of, and it’s even more fun comparing with your friends. As people began to discover the books in the early 2000’s, they began to theorize about the different characters and the plot. This has brought many people together and has expanded even into our generation. Now, you can read fanfiction, join forums, and go to conventions that are filled with people that love the series as well. There’s always something new to find.

Harry Potter has taught me so many things, and I still keep coming back for more! It makes you laugh, cry, and feel happy. Harry Potter has evolved to be so much more than just words on paper.
